Rule and Regulations

Thai food industry has been expanding in quantity, value and items for export. However, one problem obstructing the progress of this business is the trade barrier importer's government sets up by raising up technical issues related to health and safety of consumers. These issues are imposed by importer's government for the strength of domestic industry and consumer's benefits. Standards and rules of Thailand's major trade partners are as follows:

Standards and Rules of Importing Products for Thailand's Trade Partners

The United States of America
Japan
The European Union
Russia
Korea

Besides these rules and orders that each country has practiced to check imported products in order to largely protect consumers, nowadays other measures are tremendously exercised like environment issues, i.e. turtle preservation campaign in sea shrimp catching business or problems of mangrove forests, etc. It is expected that in the future many countries will pay high attention to consumers by introducing more measures for consumer benefits. It is a good sign for Thailand that Office of Food and Drug Commission has joined with Food Institution, a private organization, to consider and correct problem laws. Meanwhile, Thailand declares to use Codex standard as a referring standard in product quality upgrade. But in case of import control measures, it can be said that Thailand is highly flexible and Thailand's product importing and checking processes are not severely strict. If other countries start using measures to obstruct the import of Thai products, Thailand should consider using product checking measures to retaliate, claiming consumer benefits as our goal.
